Cathy MacDonald Selected For Director Attachment On Shortland Street

The Directors & Editors Guild of NZ (DEGNZ), NZ On Air and South Pacific Pictures Limited (SPP) are delighted to announce DEGNZ member and director Cathy MacDonald as the TV Drama Director Attachment on Shortland Steet.

“Shortland Street is an important training ground for drama directors and I’m so chuffed to be a part of it. Huge thanks to the very generous Geoff Cawthorn and Maxine Fleming for the opportunity,” said MacDonald.

“Cathy has made a significant effort to advance her career as a film and TV drama director,” said Executive Director of DEGNZ Tui Ruwhiu. “This attachment on Shortland Street is another major step toward her achieving her goals, and we are thrilled to be able to assist her in this.”

Cathy has over 15 years experience as a director in short film, television and advertising. She has won nearly 20 international awards for my work as a writer/director of promos and branded content including Young Creative at Promax Europe, Best Director at Promax World, Best Campaign at Promax World, and Best Director nominee at the New York Festivals. Her short films have been selected at 12 festivals including BAFTA and Academy Awards qualifiers Encounters Film Festival (Bristol), London International Documentary Festival, Rushes Soho Shorts (London), and Show Me Shorts (NZ).

A fast-paced serial drama in an urban setting, Shortland Street explores the lives and loves of the patients and staff of a modern metropolitan hospital and contains a heady mix of medical crisis, human drama, comedy, romance and suspense. First airing in 1992, Shortland Street celebrates 24 years on air in 2015. With around 40% of all viewers tuning in every night, Shortland Street is regularly the number one show in target demographics 18-39 and Household Shoppers with children. As well as being New Zealand’s most successful serial drama, the show screens in several international territories including Fiji, Australia and Ireland.

MacDonald is now the fifth DEGNZ member director to attach to a New Zealand TV drama series, and the third woman. Started in 2015, the initiative has seen actor and director Matthew Saville attach to director Ric Pellizarri on Screentime’s telefeature Bombshell: The Sinking of the Rainbow Warrior, actor and director Aidee Walker shadow director Michael Hurst on SPP’s Westside series, director Jamie Lawrence join director Peter Burger on Filthy Productions’ series Dirty Laundry, and director Helena Brooks shadowed Mark Beasley on SPP’s The Brokenwood Mysteries.

The TV Drama Attachment initiative is an industry professional development activity funded by NZ On Air and the production company involved and managed by DEGNZ. It is intended to give emerging drama directors the opportunity to shadow an experienced director through the pre-production, production and post-production process as a means to improve their craft skills.

Cathy MacDonald was trained by the BBC Academy in Working with Actors, Health and Safety and Directing Drama. She attended screenwriting courses at London’s Raindance Academy, and in 2011 won the $30K International Graduate Scholarship to do a Masters of Screenwriting at Central St Martins College London. In 2012 she was funded by Real Ideas Studio California to create a short documentary and attend the 2012 Cannes Film Festival. Back in New Zealand, in 2013 she attended the Script to Screen Short Film Lab where I developed my short narrative drama The December Shipment. In 2014 she self-funded the film and with it made the final shortlist from a global list of nearly 4000 directors in the $150KLexus Short Film Competition. This year she’s gained representation by Sunday Punch, the TVC production arm of The Downlow Concept.

South Pacific Pictures is New Zealand’s largest screen production company and has an international reputation for producing world-class television and film. The company is in its 28th year of operation and to date has produced more than 5000 hours of programming. Call for Applications – DEGNZ Drama Director Attachment on SHORTLAND STREET

DEGNZ invites applications for a TV Drama Director Attachment on South Pacific Pictures’ serial TV drama SHORTLAND STREET for TVNZ.

This paid attachment is currently scheduled to take place for four weeks this year commencing November 17 until December 14. It may include a small stand down period to allow for breaks in the schedule, with the aim of the Attachment getting to experience pre-production, production and post production on a major drama production.

The successful candidate will attach to one of New Zealand’s most experienced drama directors and long-time Shortland Street director, Geoffrey Cawthorn.

Payment will be determined by negotiation with the production company and the level of experience of the applicant.

An opportunity exists for the Attachment to direct a scene in the production, but this is entirely at the discretion of South Pacific Pictures and its producer(s) and director—it is not guaranteed.

The aim of the attachment is to:

  • develop and upskill new television drama directors and
  • contribute to the ongoing production of quality future television drama and
  • provide another training pathway to the limited opportunities currently available.

To be eligible, applicants MUST:

  1. Be a FULL member of DEGNZ, and
  2. Have past dramatic narrative directing experience, and
  3. Have a keen interest in television drama, and
  4. Either: –
  • Have 2 short film credits publicly screened to a paying audience at an NZFC accredited short film festival*, OR
  • Have held a position as the first assistant director of a publicly distributed and released feature film or TV drama series, OR
  • Have won an award for a short film at an NZFC accredited film festival*

JAMIE LAWRENCE GETS NOD AS DIRECTOR ATTACHMENT ON DIRTY LAUNDRY

The Directors & Editors Guild of NZ, NZ On Air and Filthy Productions are pleased to announce Jamie Lawrence as the director attachment on the Dirty Laundry TV series.

Lawrence will follow established New Zealand director Peter Burger on three episodes of Filthy Productions’ second NZ on Air funded drama production.

“I’m stoked to be selected for the attachment, and learn from Peter. He’s a director I aspire to,” said Lawrence. “I’m totally behind this initiative. It’s an awesome opportunity to be able to gain unique experience and help bridge the gap between directing short and long form content.”

Managing Director of Filthy Productions, Steven Zanoski said the selection process, which included Producer Britta Hawkins and Director Peter Burger, had been rigorous due to high calibre of applicants.

“We narrowed the field to applicants who not only showed directorial flair but demonstrated a passion for television story-telling,” said Zanoski. “Jamie kept rising to the top through hot debate. In the end, it was obvious that Jamie’s talent and sensibilities sat most comfortably alongside Dirty Laundry’s characters and stories.”

“We are delighted to support Jamie’s further development as a director with this initiative,” said NZ On Air Chief Executive Jane Wrightson.

“Jamie is the third attachment through the DEGNZ/ NZ On Air TV Drama Director Attachment Initiative, and a deserving one,” said DEGNZ Executive Director Tui Ruwhiu. “He’s making a concerted effort to achieve an outstanding career as a screen director, and shadowing the talented Peter Burger will take him even further towards his goal.”

Lawrence has achieved a run of internationally successful short films while pursuing a career in TV commercials and promotional content with film production company 8 and at TVNZ’s internal creative agency Blacksand.

Dirty Laundry is a Filthy Productions comedy drama TV series for TV One. The 13 x one-hour, NZ On Air-funded production starts filming in February 2016. Produced by Britta Hawkins and created by Rachel Lang and Gavin Strawhan, Dirty Laundry centres on a middle-class family whose mother is jailed for money laundering. If her children want to keep the lifestyle to which they’re accustomed, they’ll need to keep the family business going.

This attachment is the third in the DEGNZ TV Drama Director Attachment Scheme, after actor and director Matthew Saville’s attachment to Screentime’s telefeature Bombshell: The Sinking of the Rainbow Warrior, and actor and director Aidee Walker joining South Pacific Pictures drama series Westside.

AIDEE WALKER JOINS WESTSIDE AS DEGNZ DIRECTOR ATTACHMENT

The Directors & Editors Guild of NZ (DEGNZ), NZ On Air and South Pacific Pictures Limited (SPP) announce actor and director Aidee Walker as the DEGNZ TV drama director attachment to SPP’s WESTSIDE 2 television series.

Walker will shadow well-known New Zealand actor and director Michael Hurst through a two episode block of the show, which starts production in October.

“I was so stoked to hear that I have been given this opportunity on Westside,” Walker commented. “I can’t wait to observe the whole process from read through to directors cut and I’m excited about the collaborations with every department.”

Walker is well known as an actor, having held numerous roles including in popular TV shows Step Dave, Outrageous Fortune, Shortland Street and Mercy Peak. As a director, she has written and directed four short films with the recent Friday Tigers winning Best Short Film at the New Zealand International Film Festival and selected to play at the Melbourne International Film Festival.

 

“This is a great initiative from DEGNZ and NZ On Air and South Pacific Pictures are pleased to be able to support it,” said SPP CEO Kelly Martin. “Aidee’s wealth of experience in front of the camera combined with her short film successes make her ideally suited to this opportunity. Westside is the NZ On Air-funded prequel to hit SPP drama Outrageous Fortune. It is set in 1970s Auckland against a backdrop of real-life historical events. Westside tells the story of legendary safe cracker and career criminal Ted West, his wife Rita, their son Wolfgang and their friends, associates and nemeses. The second series will be produced by Mark Beasley.

The Directors & Editors Guild of NZ (DEGNZ), NZ On Air and Screentime New Zealand Limited are pleased to announce the first attachment through DEGNZ’s TV Drama Director Attachment Scheme.

Matthew Saville will attach to director Ric Pellizzeri on Screentime’s telefeature Bombshell: The Sinking of the Rainbow Warrior for TV One, which will begin production in October.

The DEGNZ TV Drama Director Attachment Scheme is an industry professional development initiative funded by NZ On Air and the production company involved and managed by DEGNZ. It will see three emerging directors attached to New Zealand drama productions in the 2015/2016 year.

“It’s a great opportunity to observe a director at work on a major drama production and learn,” said Saville. “I’m excited by the opportunity and the project, and thanks to DEGNZ, NZ On Air and Screentime for making it happen.”

“We’re delighted to have Matthew on the production team. We believe he will be a great asset and hope we can provide experiences for him that will enrich his skill base,” said Screentime’s Managing Director Philly de Lacey.

”As the funding agency for television  we have a significant vested interest in ensuring great talent is coming through the ranks; it will determine the quality of the projects we may fund in the future. We are really keen to see Matthew’s progress through this attachment,” said Jane Wrightson, Chief Executive of NZ On Air.

Saville is an experienced actor and screenwriter who has directed two highly successful short films. His first, Hitch Hike, premiered at the internationally recognized Tampere International Film Festival in 2012. Dive, Saville’s second short, was long listed for the Academy Awards for winning best short film and best screenplay at New Zealand’s Show Me Shorts Film Festival, and selected for the prestigious Telluride International Film Festival amongst others.

Initiated by DEGNZ, the Drama Director Attachment scheme is intended to give emerging drama directors the opportunity to shadow an experienced director through the pre-production, production and post-production process as a means to improve their craft skills. The ultimate outcome is to increase the talent pool of drama directors available to domestic and international productions in New Zealand.

This scheme follows on from DEGNZ’s recent AVED Director Attachment initiative, which was funded by the New Zealand Film Commission and Ash vs. Evil Dead Limited. It saw New Zealand directors Regan Hall, Roseanne Liang, Louise Leitch, Joe Lonie and Rene Naufahu attach to the Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert Ash vs. Evil Dead TV series, shot in Auckland and now in post production.
