The Rehearsal & Performance series provides regular opportunities for directors and actors to practise their craft and communication. Each workshop brings in an experienced moderator to guide participants as they explore a workshop scene in groups (one director, two actors) in a safe and non-pressured environment.

This May, join us for workshops in Auckland and Wellington with director Danny Mulheron.

Moderator

Danny Mulheron graduated from the New Zealand Drama School in 1983, becoming an experienced director, writer and actor in all mediums – stage, screen and television. He is known as an ‘actor’s director’ due to his particular strength in directing actors and getting extraordinary performances. 

Danny has directed award-winning television dramas (One Lane Bridge, Jonah, Runaway Millionaires), feature-length documentaries and episodic documentary series (The Kick, Why does love?, Hillary), and smash hit theatre productions. In the 2020 New Zealand Television Awards, Danny won Best Feature Drama for the TV movie Runaway Millionaires

Danny is currently editing Under the Vines, which he co-directed with Erin White. The film’s set in Central Otago and stars Rebecca Gibney (Wanted) and Charles Edwards (The Crown).  

Preparation

Selected directors and actors will be expected to do some script prep beforehand. DEGNZ will provide the scene at least one week in advance.

Join us in Auckland for our first workshop of 2021 with director Caroline Bell-Booth.

Moderator

Caroline-Bell-Booth

Caroline Bell-Booth started out her professional career creating theatre, before moving into television where she directed on Shortland Street, followed by blocks of the hit Australian show 800 Words and was head-hunted by Australia’s Channel 7 show Home and Away as a recurring guest director. Following this she joined Channel 7’s drama Between Two Worlds.

Within NZ, Caroline has been lead director on the final two seasons of TV3’s hit show Westside, and was director on TVNZ’s crime-drama The Bad Seed.

Most recently, Caroline joined the second season of the German-NZ co-production The Gulf, where she directed the finale tele-feature episode. This will go to air later in 2021, and will be available on Netflix AUS/NZ. Currently, Caroline is shooting Power Rangers which will screen on Nickelodeon and Netflix later in 2021.

Ian Hughes

Ian Hughes’ breakthrough role was in acclaimed TV series and movie Topless Women Talk About Their Lives. Topless was followed by multiple TV guest parts (Xena, Bliss, The Brokenwood Mysteries, Go Girls) and film roles (He Died with a Felafel in His Hand, Memory and Desire). He wrote, starred and directed in his own Kafkaesque short, The Waiting Room, and toured his acclaimed one-man play Ship Songs.

Ian has worked with many of New Zealand’s top directors including Niki Caro, Peter Jackson and Michael Hurst, and is now primarily a TV and commercials director himself, with work on Step Dave and nearly 300 episodes of Shortland Street.

Caroline-Bell-Booth

Caroline Bell-Booth started out creating theatre and quickly made a name for herself as a director of vision excelling at complex character projects. Early efforts saw her awarded Wellington Fringe Festival’s “Best Theatre Award”; Metro Magazine’s “Best Play of the Year”; alongside many critically acclaimed shows for Silo Theatre. She then moved into television directing, firstly on Shortland Street. Over the last few years she has shot several blocks of 800 Words and was head-hunted to be a recurring guest director on Home and Away. 2018 saw her successfully complete two episodes of both Westside and crime-drama The Bad Seed. She returned to Westside this year as lead director of season 5. She has joined Channel 7’s ambitious new drama Between Two Worlds from the creative team behind Foxtel’s A Place To Call Home – which is set to be a flagship show of the 2020 Season.

Moderator

Chris DudmanChris Dudman’s career has involved writing and directing short films, commercials, feature and series documentary and series TV drama. He directed short film successes The Graffiti of Mr Tupaia and Choice Night, and later co-wrote and directed Harry, the gritty crime drama series starring Oscar Kightley and Sam Neill. He wrote and directed The Day that Changed My Life, the multi-award winning documentary about Christchurch’s devastating earthquake, and directed two standalone episodes of James Patterson’s true crime anthology series Murder is Forever. He’s currently writing an adaptation of Archibald Baxter’s memoir We Will Not Cease. Chris was also a longtime partner of and director at Auckland TV commercials company Robber’s Dog.
