Wellington – Rehearsal & Performance with Director/Producer Simon Bennett

Rehearsal & Performance is a practical half-day workshop focused on developing directors and actors’ tools to build better director/actor relationships for on-screen results.

Guided by director/producer Simon Bennett, participants will explore a scene in groups (one director, two actors) in a safe and non-pressured environment. Lunch is provided.

Simon Bennett has worked extensively as a stage and screen director and producer since graduating from Toi Whakaari in 1988. In 1995, he moved into television work: first directing, then producing Shortland Street.

In the years since, Simon’s directing highlights have included five seasons of Outrageous Fortune (for which he won an Achievement in Directing award in the 2007 Air NZ Screen Awards), Sione’s 2: Unfinished Business, The Almighty Johnsons, and Spies and Lies.

Preparation

The selected directors and actors will be expected to do some script prep beforehand. DEGNZ will provide the scene in advance.

Wellington – Rehearsal & Performance with Director Michael Duignan

DEGNZ invites directors and actors to register their interest in the first Wellington edition of Rehearsal & Performance, taking place on April 7.

Director Michael Duignan (Go Girls, The Blue Rose) will share his insights into how directors and actors can work better collaboratively to achieve great on screen performances.

This is a practical half-day workshop focused on giving participants tools to build better director/actor relationships. Participants will spend time exploring and rehearsing a scene in groups (one director, two actors) in a safe and non-pressured environment with guidance from Michael.

The selected directors and actors will be expected to do some preparation beforehand – DEGNZ will provide the scene in advance.

Directors and actors register via Eventbrite by Friday 23 March, 12 noon. Spots are limited to four directors and eight actors. If selected, DEGNZ will contact you directly to confirm your participation.

Michael Duignan

Michael Duignan is a writer/director creating film, television, commercials and photography. His short films have screened all around the world including the New York Film Festival, BFI London Film Festival and many others. Michael has directed episodes of top rating and critically acclaimed shows The CultGo Girls and The Blue Rose which was nominated at the 2013 Monte Carlo TV festival alongside Breaking Bad, The Killing and Homeland. He was recently awarded a writing residency at Studio One Toi Tu where he continued to develop a number of feature film projects.

Auckland – Rehearsal & Performance with Actor Tandi Wright

Rehearsal & Performance (the new and improved Rehearsal Room) is up and running for 2018 in Auckland. DEGNZ welcomes directors and actors to register their interest for a chance to be involved.

Actor Tandi Wright will guide this half-day workshop where she will help directors and actors create great performances on screen through improving collaborative efforts. Tandi will be there to provide advice and guidance so that everyone can get the most out of the workshop.

In a safe and non-pressured environment, groups of three (one director, two actors) will have the opportunity to explore a scene with the support of Tandi.

Participants will receive the scene in advance and are expected to do some preparation before the workshop. Directors will also be provided with a document to help them in their prep. 

We look forward to this opportunity to help both directors and actors improve their practical skills and create industry relationships.

 

Tandi Wright is an actor of more than 20 years experience and has worked consistently across all the genres – film, television, stage and radio. She has worked in the US, Australia and NZ, and has been nominated for numerous theatre and screen awards in NZ. Theatre highlights include The Events and When The Rain Stops Falling. Screen highlights include The Returned, The Rehearsal, Jack the Giant Slayer and Out of the Blue. Tandi is one of the Vice-Presidents of Equity New Zealand.

Christchurch – Rehearsal & Performance with Director/Actor Kathy McRae

Rehearsal & Performance, DEGNZ’s revamped Rehearsal Room workshop series, kicks off 2018 in Christchurch! DEGNZ welcomes both directors and actors to register their interest for a chance to be involved.

In this hands-on half-day workshop, director/actor Kathy McRae will share ways in which directors and actors can work better collaboratively to achieve great on screen performances.

Rehearsal & Performance brings together participants in groups of three (one director, two actors) to explore and rehearse a scene in a safe and non-pressured environment with advice and guidance from Kathy throughout the workshop.

Participants will receive the scene in advance and are expected to do some preparation before the workshop. Directors will also be provided with a document to help them in their prep.

 

Kathy McRaeKathy McRae has 20 years of directing experience under her belt. Initially trained as an actor at Toi Whakaari, Kathy began directing theatre in 1997. She directed for South Pacific Pictures for seven years working on Shortland Street, Go Girls and Nothing Trivial. She recently made a return to acting, portraying convicted murderer Helen Milner in telefeature Catching the Black Widow, and directed A Doll’s House at Circa Theatre, Emily Perkin’s modern adaptation of Ibsen’s original play.
