Directors & Editors Guild of NZ (DEGNZ) member and director Regan Hall has directed one episode in Season 3 of STARZ Network’s Ash vs Evil Dead (AVED) television series following his attachment to the series in 2015.
“I was excited to helm an episode of this fantastic cult franchise, which included shooting an epic fight scene, a gruesome demon, and loads of witty one-liners. Rob Tapert and his team have been very supportive, and I thank STARZ, the NZFC, and the DEGNZ for the foot in the door,” said Hall.
“During Season 1 of AVED we worked with the DEGNZ to offer several director attachments including to the 2nd Unit and stunt departments. Any of those directors would have been great to have on the show. We are happy to be able to give this opportunity to Regan and support talented New Zealand directors,” said Tapert.
“We are thrilled to see another of the attachment initiatives we have been involved with bear fruit with Regan directing on AVED,” said Executive Director Tui Ruwhiu. “Few Kiwis get the opportunity to direct on high budget US drama and this is a great coup for our TV drama strategy.”
Hall was one of five New Zealand directors with New Zealand Film Commission and STARZ support who attached to the first AVED series in 2015. He is the first of the attachments to gain employment on the show.
Hall directed his first feature film Fast Girls in the United Kingdom in 2012 following a successful career as a director in advertising, fashion and music.
Ash vs Evil Dead is a half-hour American horror-comedy television series from executive producers and The Evil Dead original filmmakers Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert and Bruce Campbell for the STARZ premium cable network. It’s executive produced in New Zealand by producer Rob Tapert, who has been behind many of the US TV network shows made here, including Spartacus, Legend of the Seeker, Xena: Warrior Princess, and Hercules: Legendary Journeys. AVED is currently in production and is made in Auckland, primarily at a number of studio locations around the city.

New Zealand filmmaker Regan Hall premiered his debut feature film Fast Girls in 2012. The Olympic-themed all-girl sports drama, a co-production between the BFI and Studiocanal, received strong reviews during its 370-screen UK release.
Hall grew up in Auckland, New Zealand, the son of successful fashion designers. He developed a passion for film as a teenager and after graduating from NZ’s top film school went on to work as a film editor in Wellington, home to Peter Jackson’s Weta workshop.
In 2000 he moved to London and began creating films for the advertising, fashion and music industries. He has become renowned for producing and directing high-profile fashion films for clients that include Dolce and Gabbana, Revlon, and Swarovski – recently working on commercials for fashion photographer Mario Testino.
In 2010 he won multiple awards for his short film 3 Hours. The all-Iraqi war drama told the true story of a mass shooting in Baghdad. Premiering at Doha Tribeca, it went on to screen in over forty international festivals.

The Directors & Editors Guild of NZ is a not-for-profit membership organisation that represents Directors and Editors in the New Zealand screen industry. This includes Directors and Editors of feature drama and documentary; television drama, documentary and factual programmes; short films; video art; animation; commercials and web content.

DEGNZ is a voice for Directors and Editors in influencing policy in the interest of our members. We do this through our membership of the pan‐industry group SINZ (Screen Industry New Zealand), and by making submissions to government and public officials.
Internationally, we work co-operatively with other guilds and we belong to the International Affiliation of English‐Speaking Directors’ Organisations (IEASDO).
