Screenlink: Cutting it as a Commercials Director

Come join us for networking drinks at Screenlink on October 10, hosted by Directors & Editors Guild of NZ with New Zealand Advertising Producers Group and Ngā Aho Whakaari.

Director Robin Walters will share on his career in commercials, spanning over 25 years in New Zealand and abroad, and reflect on the changing nature of the industry

Robin has been providing his unique approach to commercials for over a decade, having worked with brands including Ebay, NZTA, Hyundai, Nibble, McDonald’s and Spark. He joined Black Stump Films and later Curious and Robber’s Dog. Earlier this year, Robin started TUTU FILMS with wife Sam.

Known for both comedy and drama, Robins’ work has been commended throughout the industry as some of the most honest and funniest to come out of Australasia in recent years.

Call for Applications: DEGNZ Selects with Mary Magdalene Director Garth Davis

DEGNZ Selects presents this special director’s masterclass on 21 March with Lion and Top of the Lake director Garth Davis. Garth will discuss in depth the making of his latest feature Mary Magdalene, to be released in cinemas on 22 March starring Rooney Mara and Joaquin Phoenix. Participants are encouraged to watch Mary Magdalene before the class – see below for advanced screenings.

Garth is BAFTA- and Emmy-nominated for Top of the Lake, DGA Best First Feature winner for Lion, and Gold Lion winner for his TV commercials work. This masterclass is a rare opportunity to engage with a much sought after director on the international scene.

Cost: DEGNZ members free, Non-members $50.

DEGNZ Selects presents: Q&A with top international commercials director Nathan Price

Nathan was ranked as one of the top 10 directors in Asia/Australasia, has taken out Cannes Lions Emmy Awards, and has directed ads for some of the world’s biggest brands including Honda, Samsung and Cadbury, as well as Sky, Royal London, T-Mobile, and a little closer to home, State Insurance. Nathan will discuss rising up as a film maker in the ad business and what he’s learnt along the way about being a good ad maker. It’s not just for those working in the world of commercials – there will be plenty of interest to all film makers.
