Documentary Masterclass and Project Lab with Award-Winning Filmmaker Doug Blush

This May, the Directors & Editors Guild of NZ is thrilled to present two days of feature documentary workshops for editors, directors and producers with US documentary filmmaker Doug Blush. Doug returns to New Zealand thanks to a partnership with Loading Docs.

DOUG BLUSH is an award-winning editor, director, producer, writer and cinematographer whose work includes over 130 feature and television projects, and is a member of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) as well as the American Cinema Editors (ACE).

His recent credits include, as edit consultant, Notable Pictures’ The Chills: The Triumph and Tragedy of Martin Phillipps, as consulting editor and co-producer, the 2019 Academy Award winning Period. End Of Sentence, the 2018 Academy Award winning Icarus, and, as supervising editor, the 2013 Oscar-winning 20 Feet From Stardom, for which he also received the ACE Eddie Award for Best Documentary Editing. He was Co-Editor and Associate Producer of Kirby Dick’s The Hunting Ground in 2014, and the Oscar nominated and Emmy winning The Invisible War in 2012.

Doug co-owns MadPix Films, a production and post production company in Los Angeles dedicated to documentary and independent films. He is also a longtime film educator with classes and seminars at USC, UCLA, Syracuse University and the YoungArts Foundation in Miami, as well as exchanges and panels in Indonesia, Brazil, New Zealand, Armenia, Malaysia, Nigeria, China, the Netherlands and more.

Day 1: Masterclass on Producing and Editing a Winning Documentary

Sunday 19 May, 9am – 5pm, MTG RM, Kingsland, Auckland

In the world of documentary, the edit is crucial. This interactive Masterclass for editors, producers and directors will connect editing with the other crafts involved in documentary filmmaking.

The Masterclass will survey where we are and where we’re heading in documentary – using examples from over 15 years of award winning and widely distributed docs from Doug’s catalog of over 130 feature films. Participants will get to see how many major doc features and shorts made the most of great stories and overcame huge problems to succeed.

The day will discuss successful strategies for production, editing and post schedules, and promotion, distribution and festivals. Participants are also encouraged to discuss current issues they’re facing in their films, or questions about ideas in the planning stages.

Day 2: Project Lab

Monday 20 May, 9am – 4pm, MTG RM, Kingsland, Auckland

Call for Applications!

The Lab will consist of a group seminar with up to 6 selected teams with a feature documentary project in post-production. Editors may attend on behalf of their project or come as a team.

The day will focus on how to think about structure, character arcs and larger meanings of each film, and how to plan out an edit path with goals and benchmarks.

Participants will be asked to introduce their project with a logline summary and show a sample (based on where the project is) for group discussion and feedback in a confidential environment.

We will discuss each project, and go over the potential promising story directions and possible pitfalls of each. Doug will also draw on clips from his past docs to show how they may have dealt with similar issues in the edit and the shoot.

Cost: $85 / team; fee waived if the editor is a DEGNZ Full member

Call for Applications: Director’s Workshop & Project Consultations with Rachel Perkins

The Directors & Editors Guild of NZ invites directors to apply for a first-time feature Director’s Workshop and Project Consultation with Australian director Rachel Perkins to be held in Auckland.

Rachel Perkins

Rachel Perkins is well established in the Australian filmmaking industry as a film and television director, producer and writer. Through these various roles she has managed to provide a much-needed voice for indigenous stories, something Rachel is very passionate about. In 1992, she founded the documentary and narrative production company Blackfella Films. The company’s achievements include the award-winning landmark documentary series First Australians.

Rachel has directed four feature films, which have screened at over 75 film festivals worldwide: Jasper Jones (2017), Bran Nue Dae (2009), One Night the Moon (2001) and Radiance (1998). She currently serves on the Board of the Charles Perkins Trust, the Council of the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS), and the Australian Heritage Council (Department of the Environment and Energy).

On Saturday 17 March, Rachel will give a morning half-day Director’s Workshop on the trails, tribulations and preparation for your first feature for up to 30 participants.

The afternoon will be reserved for 1-hour Project Consultations with up to four selected writer/directors or writer and director teams with a narrative drama or feature documentary project in active development.

Directors can apply for both the Workshop and Project Consultation, or just the Workshop if you do not have a project currently in active development.

 

When: Saturday 17 March. Workshop – 8.30am to 12pm. Project Consultations will be held from 12.45 to 5.30pm.

Travel assistance may be available for some DEGNZ members coming from out of Auckland.

Payable upon successful application.

Selected projects may bring along the writer(s) to the consultation session at no extra cost.

The Directors & Editors Guild of NZ invites directors to apply for a Feature Documentary Directing Masterclass and Project Consultation with British director Lucy Walker to be held in Auckland.

Director Lucy WalkerLucy Walker is an Emmy-winning British film director who has twice been nominated for an Academy Award and is renowned for creating riveting, character-driven nonfiction that delivers emotionally and narratively. The Hollywood Reporter has called her “the new Errol Morris” and Variety has praised her unique ability to connect with audiences.

Lucy’s filmography includes feature documentaries The Crash Reel (2013), Waste Land (2010), Countdown to Zero (2010), Blindsight (2006), Devil’s Playground (2002) and several short films, notably The Tsunami and the Cherry Blossom (2011) and The Lion’s Mouth Opens (2014). Her films have also been nominated for seven Emmys, an Independent Spirit Award, a DGA Award and a Gotham Award and have won over one hundred other film awards.

On Saturday 22 July, Lucy will lead a half-day Masterclass for up to ten directors in the morning. This will be followed by individual 1-hour Project Consultations with up to four selected directors who have feature documentary projects in active development. Project Consultation sessions are open to directors but not collaborators.

Directors can apply for both the Masterclass and Project Consultation, or just the Masterclass if they do not have a current project.

 

Cost: DEGNZ members free, DEGNZ members free; Non-members – Masterclass $50, Project Consultation $100.

Doug Blush Leads Inspirational Documentary Editing Masterclass

DEGNZ editors and their accompanying directors were treated to a Documentary Editing Masterclass with Doug Blush, one of America’s top documentary editors and supervising editor on Oscar winner 20 Feet From Stardom and The Music of Strangers: Yo-Yo Ma and The Silk Road Ensemble, which is currently in cinemas.

Having worked on over 70 documentary features and TV programmes, Doug had plenty of material to dig into with the class on Day One, using several examples from his credits to elaborate on story, character and message.

On the second day, Doug led a project consultation seminar for selected editor-director teams. Each editor had a feature documentary currently in post-production.

Doug was a wonderful communicator and feedback from the two days was very positive. Thank you to Doug and everyone who was involved!
